For her Performa Commission, Shirin Neshat will present OverRuled, a highly stylized performance set in a courtroom which references historical and contemporary Iranian and Arab uprisings against various forms of dictatorship and theocracy. Drawing from her previous works Turbulent (1998), a musical duet between a male and female singer, and The Last Word (2003), a trail of a poet, OverRuled will feature actors, singers, and musicians including the Iranian actor Mohammad B. Ghaffari and Mohsen Namjoo, one of the most celebrated Iranian musicians today. OverRuled is directed by Neshat and written by Shoja Azari. Neshat's Performa Commission will also marks the tenth anniversary of RoseLee Goldberg commissioning the artist to create her first live work, Logic of the Birds, in 2001, an experience that eventually led to Goldberg establishing Performa.
