Digital media are having an enormous impact on the world. Programmed Visions Software and Memory Wendy Hui Kyong Chun (MIT Press, Usa, April 2011)



New media thrives on cycles of obsolescence and renewal: from celebrations of cyber-everything to Y2K, from the dot-com bust to the next big things--mobile mobs, Web 3.0, cloud computing. In Programmed Visions, Wendy Hui Kyong Chun argues that these cycles result in part from the ways in which new media encapsulates a logic of programmability. New media proliferates "programmed visions," which seek to shape and predict--even embody--a future based on past data. These programmed visions have also made computers, based on metaphor, metaphors for metaphor itself, for a general logic of substitutability. Chun approaches the concept of programmability through the surprising materialization of software as a "thing" in its own right, tracing the hardening of programming into software and of memory into storage. She argues that the clarity offered by software as metaphor should make us pause, because software also engenders a profound sense of ignorance: who knows what lurks behind our smiling interfaces, behind the objects we click and manipulate? The less we know, the more we are shown. This paradox, Chun argues, does not diminish new media’s power, but rather grounds computing’s appeal. Its combination of what can be seen and not seen, known (knowable) and not known--its separation of interface from algorithm and software from hardware--makes it a powerful metaphor for everything we believe is invisible yet generates visible, logical effects, from genetics to the invisible hand of the market, from ideology to culture.

Debates over new media resonate with the parable of the six blind men and the ele- phant. Each man seizes a portion of the animal and offers a different analogy: the elephant is like a wall, a spear, a snake, a tree, a palm, a rope. Refusing to back down from their positions since they are based on personal experience, the wise men engage in an unending dispute with each “in his own opinion / Exceeding stiff and strong / Though each was partly in the right, / And all were in the wrong!” The moral, accord- ing to John Godfrey Saxe’s version of this tale, is: “So oft in theologic wars, / The disputants, I ween, / Rail on in utter ignorance / Of what each other mean, / And prate about an Elephant / Not one of them has seen!”1 It is perhaps irreverent to compare a poem on the incomprehensibility of the divine to arguments over new media, but the invisibility, ubiquity, and alleged power of new media (and technology more generally) lend themselves to this analogy. It seems impossible to know the extent, content, and effects of new media. Who can touch the entire contents of the World Wide Web or know the real size of the Internet or of mobile networks? Who can read and examine all time-based online interactions? Who can expertly move from analyzing social networking sites to Japanese cell phone novels to hardware algorithms to databases? Is a global picture of new media possible? In response to these difficulties, many within the field of new media studies have moved away from specific content and technologies toward what seems to be common to all new media objects and moments: software. All new media objects allegedly rely on—or, most strongly, can be reduced to—software, a visibly invisible or invisibly visible essence. Software seems to allow one to grasp the entire elephant because it is the invisible whole that generates the sensuous parts. Based on and yet exceeding our sense of touch—based on our ability to manipulate virtual objects we cannot entirely see—it is a magical source that promises to bring together the fractured field of new media studies and to encapsulate the difference this field makes. Too big to know - David Weinberger (Basic Books, Usa, 2012)

Knowing used to be so straightforward. If we wanted to know something we looked it up, asked an expert, gathered the facts, weighted the possibilities, and honed in on the best answer ourselves. David Weinberger: What the Internet Means for How We Think about The World



In this time of easy access to information, experts, and news, the last thing you would expect is that we are in the midst of a crisis in knowledge. But sometimes it seems that we, in fact, are, says Internet theorist David Weinberger.
How's that? Weinberger says that on the day he sat down to write the prologue to his new book, Too Big to Know, three of the six front-page New York Times stories -- about topics as diverse as the Gulf oil spill, John Updike's archive, and soccer players who fake injury -- could have carried the subhead, "Knowledge in Crisis!" On the face of it, these stories do not seem to be about knowledge in any way, or even to be connected at all. But Weinberger says that at their core these stories are all about questions of how we store, organize, find, and apply knowledge -- questions that are changing rapidly as knowledge is increasingly stored not in paper or people's minds, but online.
I asked Weinberger a few questions about his new book, how the Internet is changing knowledge, and, in turn, how it is changing us.

In your book, you argue that we are in a new age of "networked knowledge," meaning that knowledge -- ideas, information, wisdom even -- has broken out of its physical confines (the pages of a book or the mind of a person) and now exists in a hyperconnected online state. You say that this new structure "feels more natural because the old ideals of knowledge were never realistic." In what ways does it feel more natural? What were these old ideals of knowledge and in what ways were they unnatural?
We've known for a long time that there was more going on in the world than our libraries could contain or our media could show us. We've known that experts are not as reliable as they often were made out to be. We've known that world is less ready and able to come to rational agreement than we'd been promised. We've known much of our codified knowledge is less than perfectly unreliable. We've known that the topical domains into which we divide knowledge so we can master them are not nearly as separate as their shelves in the library indicate. We've known that we're little creatures in a universe vast beyond our ability to exaggerate.
Yet the short version of the history of knowledge goes something like: Plato defines knowledge as justified true belief. We then gradually increase the criteria of justification until knowledge has to pass a very high bar indeed. Knowledge comes to be that which we can know with certainty, what is settled and beyond reasonable dispute. Yet, there is one basic fact about us human beings: We are profoundly fallible. We've known since the dawn of civilization that we basically get everything wrong and then die. The demand for certainty and clarity placed on creatures who recognize their own uncertainty is, in some sense, unnatural.
I think the Net generation is beginning to see knowledge in a way that is closer to the truth about knowledge -- a truth we've long known but couldn't instantiate. My generation, and the many generations before mine, have thought about knowledge as being the collected set of trusted content, typically expressed in libraries full of books. Our tradition has taken the trans-generational project of building this Library of Knowledge book by book as our God-given task as humans. Yet, for the coming generation, knowing looks less like capturing truths in books than engaging in never-settled networks of discussion and argument. That social activity -- collaborative and contentious, often at the same time -- is a more accurate reflection of our condition as imperfect social creatures trying to understand a world that is too big and too complex for even the biggest-headed expert.
This new topology of knowledge reflects the topology of the Net. The Net (and especially the Web) is constructed quite literally out of links, each of which expresses some human interest. If I link to a site, it's because I think it matters in some way, and I want it to matter that way to you. The result is a World Wide Web with billions of pages and probably trillions of links that is a direct reflection of what matters to us humans, for better or worse. The knowledge networks that live in this new ecosystem share in that property; they are built out of, and reflect, human interest. Like our collective interests, the Web and the knowledge that resides there is at odds and linked in conversation. That's why the Internet, for all its weirdness, feels so familiar and comfortable to so many of us. And that's the sense in which I think networked knowledge is more "natural."

Gilbert Simondon - L'individuazione. Alla luce delle nozioni di forma e d'informazione (Mimesis, It, Dicembre 2011)





Questo testo costituisce la prima traduzione italiana integrale del capolavoro di Gilbert Simondon (1924-1989): la tesi di dottorato principale. In questo saggio fondamentale, l’Autore promuove una puntuale critica alle classiche concezioni filosofiche delle nozioni di individuo e soggetto, ripensandone le definizioni a partire dal processo che sottende alla loro costituzione ed elaborazione. A tale scopo, Simondon sviluppa alcune significative suggestioni provenienti dalla tradizione della fenomenologia francese, dalla Gestaltpsychologie, dalla Teoria dell’Informazione e dalla Fisica quantistica, articolando, al contempo, una riflessione autonoma e sistematica, atta a ripensare l’individualità alla luce dei contributi delle più recenti teorie scientifiche. Gilbert Simondon (Saint-Étienne, 1924-Palaiseau, 1989) è il massimo filosofo della tecnologia del ‘900. Nella sua opera, ha articolato un’originale interpretazione filosofica del processo ontogenetico che sottende alla costituzione dell’individualità, sviluppando un interesse scientificamente documentato per la dimensione culturale delle tecniche e delle tecnologie. Docente di Psychologie générale alla Sorbona dal 1964 al 1984, fondatore e direttore del Laboratoire de Psychologie générale et Technologie, è autore, oltre che de L’individuation à la lumière des notions de forme et d’information, del saggio Du mode d’existence des objets techniques (Aubier, 1958).


Giovanni Carrozzini (Lecce, 1981), Dottore di ricerca in discipline storico-filosofiche all’Università del Salento, è uno dei maggiori studiosi del pensiero simondoniano. Si occupa di epistemologia e di storia e filosofia delle scienze e delle tecniche. Oltre ai volumi Gilbert Simondon: per un’assiomatica dei saperi. Dall’“ontologia dell’individuo” alla filosofia della tecnologia (2006) e Gilbert Simondon filosofo della mentalité technique (Mimesis, 2011), ha curato un numero monografico della rivista «Il Protagora» (di cui è segretario di redazione), Gilbert Simondon filosofo delle tecniche (2008). È collaboratore scientifico del Centro Internazionale Insubrico “Carlo Cattaneo” e “Giulio Preti”.

Communication as work: we have recently experienced a profound transformation in the processes of production. While the assembly line (invented by Henry Ford at the beginning of the last century) excluded any form of linguistic productivity, today, there is no production without communication. The new technologies are linguistic machines. This revolution has produced a new kind of worker who is not a specialist but is versatile and infinitely adaptable. If standardized mass production was dominant in the past, today we produce an array of different goods corresponding to specific consumer niches. This is the post-Fordist model described by Christian Marazzi in Capital and Affects (first published in 1994 as Il posto dei calzini [The place for the socks]). Tracing the development of this new model of labor from Toyota plants in Japan to the most recent innovations, Marazzi’s critique goes beyond political economy to encompass issues related to social life, political engagement, democratic institutions, interpersonal relations, and the role of language in liberal democracies.


This translation at long last makes Marazzi’s first book available to English readers. Capital and Affectsstands not only as the foundation to Marazzi's subsequent work, but as foundational work in post-Fordist literature, with an analysis startlingly relevant to today’s troubled economic times. This Semiotext(e) edition includes the afterword Marazzi wrote for the 1999 Italian edition.


Christian Marazzi was born in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1951. He obtained a degree in Political Science at the University of Padova, a master’s degree at the London School of Economics and a doctoral degree in Economics at the City University of London. He has taught at the University of Padova, the State University of New York, and at the University of Lausanne. He is currently Director of Socio-Economic Research at the Scuola Universitaria della Svizzera Italiana.

29.11.2011 - È italiana la «porta logica» del computer quantistico @ Corriere della sera



MILANO - È un chip di vetro di due centimetri di lato la nuova «porta logica» del futuro computer quantistico che invece degli elettroni userà la luce, cioè i fotoni. L’hanno ideata, costruita e brevettata un gruppo di ricercatori italiani dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma, del Politecnico di Milano e dell’Istituto di fotonica e nanotecnologie del Cnr. I dettagli sono ora pubblicati sulla rivista britannica Nature Communications.
QU-BIT - Sul chip con un laser è stato inciso un circuito integrato che pilota i fotoni in maniera precisa governando la luce polarizzata e trasferendo così una maggiore quantità di informazione in qu-bit che sono gli elementi di base di un computer quantistico. «Finora si lavorava con specchi e altri elementi convenzionali», spiega Paolo Mataloni, professore di ottica quantistica all’Università La Sapienza. «Adesso il nuovo dispositivo miniaturizzato consente risultati prima inimmaginabili e permette di utilizzare l’informazione contenuta nel fotone sfruttando appunto la polarizzazione dello stesso fotone».
CNOT - Il chip di vetro è stato battezzato Cnot e rappresenta uno degli elementi fondamentali per la realizzazione dei computer quantistici ottici. La loro capacità farà impallidire le possibilità offerte dagli elaboratori odierni. Il risultato ottenuto con vari collaboratori, tra cui Fabio Sciarrino e Roberto Osellame, è frutto di un piano finanziato dal ministero Istruzione, università e ricerca e dal progetto europeo Quasar.

16.11.2011 Robert Kurz - Vies et mort du capitalisme. Chroniques de la crise (Éditions Lignes)



Le philosophe allemand Robert Kurz, principal théoricien de la critique de la valeur en Europe, propose ici son analyse de la crise financière mondiale de 2008. Selon lui, avec la troisième révolution industrielle (la microélectronique), le capitalisme atteint sa limite interne absolue. C’est à cette limite que les divers épisodes de la présente crise doivent être rapportés pour devenir intelligibles.
Le philosophe allemand Robert Kurz est le principal théoricien de la « critique de la valeur » en Europe. Rédigées avant, pendant et après la crise financière mondiale de septembre 2008, les analyses ici réunies font apparaître que depuis l’avènement de la troisième révolution industrielle (microélectronique), les recettes politiques traditionnelles de la gauche, fondées sur une lecture « classique » de Marx, ont perdu toute efficience. Dans un monde financiarisé à l’extrême, les salariés ne représentent en effet plus qu’une variable d’ajustement d’importance relativement négligeable. La finance mondiale associée à la libre fluctuation des marchés, dont l’épisode dessubprimes a récemment mis au jour l’absurdité et dont les effets ont été désastreux, n’est plus fondée en valeur d’aucune manière. Exiger le maintien des emplois existants, par exemple, tout en fustigeant les « excès » d’une finance mondiale dérégulée, c’est se rendre nostalgique d’une vision fordiste éculée, datant d’un temps où la « valeur » s’articulait encore à la production réelle, et où la monnaie mondiale (le dollar) était convertible en or. Plus grave, c’est exposer la gauche au risque de passer pour une instance de conservation davantage que d’émancipation.
La critique de Robert Kurz s’appuie sur une lecture renouvelée des thèses tardives de Marx ayant trait à la question de la valeur. Elle montre précisément de quelle façon le capitalisme aurait atteint sa « limite interne ». Mais si, comme l’affirme Anselm Jappe dans Crédit à mort, « Le capitalisme fait beaucoup plus contre lui-même que ce que tous ses adversaires réunis ont pu faire », il n’en reste pas moins, selon Robert Kurz, que sa chute ne pourra résulter que d’une mise en cause théorique radicale. En dépit de son profond délabrement et des crises de gravité croissante qu’il engendre, le capitalisme ne pourra en effet être mis à bas par la lutte de classes clairement identifiées (analyse classique ayant fait long feu), pas plus que par les tenants d’un « bien-être de frugalité » fondé sur le concept de « décroissance » ou encore par les chantres d’une prétendue « économie solidaire ».
Pour Robert Kurz, il est urgent de mener une critique théorique catégorielle du capitalisme afin de contester la validité de ses éléments structuraux : le travail abstrait, la marchandise, l’argent et l’État. « Le capitalisme n’est rien d’autre que l’accumulation d’argent comme fin en soi, et la substance de cet argent réside dans l’utilisation toujours croissante de force de travail humaine. Mais, en même temps, la concurrence entraîne une augmentation de la productivité qui rend cette force de travail de plus en plus superflue. En dépit de toutes les crises, cette contradiction interne semblait toujours surmontée via la régénération de l’absorption massive de force de travail par de nouvelles industries. Le « miracle économique  » d’après 1945 a fait de cette capacité du capitalisme un credo. Or, depuis les années 1980, la troisième révolution industrielle a entraîné un nouveau niveau de rationalisation qui a lui-même entraîné une dévalorisation de la force de travail dans des proportions encore jamais vues. La substance réelle de la valorisation du capital se dissout, sans que de nouvelles industries capables d’engendrer une véritable croissance aient vu le jour. La phase néolibérale n’a été que la tentative, d’une part, de gérer de façon répressive la crise sociale découlant de cet état de fait et, d’autre part, de créer une croissance sans substance du capital fictif par l’expansion effrénée du crédit, de l’endettement et des bulles financières sur les marchés financiers et immobiliers. »

Un nuovo caso (siriano) di Sorvegliare e Punire



Alla repressione delle rivolte in Siria starebbe dando il suo contribuito anche un'azienda italiana con sede nel varesino, la Area spa, attiva dal 1996 e specializzata nel settore della sorveglianza. Secondo quanto riferisce Bloomberg, squadre di tecnici della società sono giunte quest'anno a Damasco, in piena escalation delle violenze (più di tremila vittime finora). E sotto la guida dei servizi di intelligence siriani sono impegnate a installare un sofisticato sistema per intercettare, leggere e catalogare ogni email o altra comunicazione in entrata o in uscita dal Paese. Ben più intrusivo, dunque, del semplice dispositivo per bloccare i siti web.
Il sistema, nome in codice "Asfador", attualmente in fase di test, consentirà di monitorare in tempo reale ogni comunicazione, disegnando grafici che mostrino la mappa dei network virtuali di ogni cittadino. Asfador sarebbe l'uomo che, secondo le fonti interpellate da Bloomberg, avrebbe contattato Area nel 2008, proponendo l'accordo (del valore di oltre 13 milioni di euro) con la compagnia statale (e principale operatore) Syrian Telecommunication Establishment. Senza l'ausilio della società italiana, la Syrian Telecom avrebbe infatti potuto controllare solo una parte delle comunicazioni del Paese, e non tutto il traffico internet. Area ha chiuso l'affare nel 2009. E lo scorso febbraio una prima nave carica di computer e altre tecnologie ha attraccato nel porto di Latakia. (...)

Inizia l'era del post-pc ? - Digital Life

The magician. Il mago, l’illusionista, anche lo stregone. Con questo titolo oggi l’Economist ricorda la figura di Steve Jobs. Diversi i servizi sull’uomo dal girocollo nero scomparso mercoledì scorso  ma uno in particolare vuole celebrare la sua visione del presente e del futuro. E lo fa con poche parole d’elogio e alcuni numeri molti interessanti, forniti dalla banca Morgan Stanley, che vedrebbero per il 2011 la vendita combinata di smartphone e tablet superare per la prima volta quella dei personal computer (portatili compresi). Ossia il 2011, l’anno della morte del guru di Cupertino, sarebbe anche quello che sancisce l’inizio dell’era del “post Pc”, come la chiamava appunto Steve Jobs. Quella che il settimanale britannico definisce l’epoca di Wintelil binomio “devastante”, seppur non più esclusivo, di Windows con Intel – potrebbe essere arrivata al tramonto. L’alba, ormai già inoltrata, è per i device mobili intelligenti, i computer da tasca o da borsa, come illustra bene la grafica pubblicata dal settimanale, che vedete sotto.

Matt Lee - v1.0 Remix - On the philosophical e-book


Nel mondo dell'editoria tutto sta cambiando velocemente. Proprio per questo motivo è necessario approfondire alcune pratiche di e-book filosofico in rete, anche solo per analizzare come i giovani filosofi si confrontano con il mercato editoriale, i libri digitali e il mondo della Rete. Emblematico il caso di Matt Lee, giovane accademico dell'Università di Greenwich (UK) e tra i coordinatori della collana Volcanic Lines, offshoot del programma di ricerca universitario "Deleuzian Research Group". Il giovane filosofo si perita però di specificare che è in vendita una versione 1.0 (v1.0 !!) di Oceanic Ontology, suscettibile di approfondimenti e variazioni future. Come si può vedere nel post precedente Matt Lee pubblica la sua tesi di dottorato su e.book, tramite il sito Lulu.com (ma è disponibile anche su iTunes al prezzo di dollari 2,99), in tre modalità diverse:
