Nomadology: The War Machine - Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (Semiotext(e), Usa, 1986)

In this daring essay inspired by Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari redefine the relation between the state and its war machine. Far from being a part of the state, warriors (the army) are nomads who always come from the outside and keep threatening the authority of the state. In the same vein, nomadic science keeps infiltrating royal science, undermining its axioms and principles. Nomadology is a speedy, pocket-sized treatise that refuses to be pinned down. Theorizing a dynamic relationship between sedentary power and “schizophrenic lines of flight,” this volume is meant to be read in transit, smuggled into urban nightclubs, offices, and subways.
Deleuze and Guattari propose a creative and resistant ethics of becoming-imperceptible, strategizing a continuous invention of weapons on the run. An anarchic bricolage of ideas uprooted from anthropology, aesthetics, history, and military strategy, Nomadology carries out Deleuze’s desire to “leave philosophy, but to leave it as a philosopher.”

Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris VIII, Vincennes/Saint Denis. He published 25 books, including five in collaboration with Félix Guattari.
Félix Guattari (1930-1992), post-’68 French psychoanalyst and philosopher, is the author of Anti-Oedipus (with Gilles Deleuze), and a number of books published by Semiotext(e), including The Anti-Oedipus Papers, and Molecular Revolution in Brazil (with Suely Rolnik).

Hegel, Deleuze, and the Critique of Representation - Henry Somers-Hall (Suny Press, Usa, April 2012)

A critical account of the key connections between twentieth-century French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and nineteenth-century German idealist G. W. F. Hegel. Hegel, Deleuze, and the Critique of Representation provides a critical account of the key connections between twentieth-century French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and nineteenth-century German idealist G. W. F. Hegel. While Hegel has been recognized as one of the key targets of Deleuze’s philosophical writing, Henry Somers-Hall shows how Deleuze’s antipathy to Hegel has its roots in a problem the two thinkers both try to address: getting beyond a philosophy of judgment and the restrictions of Kant’s transcendental idealism. By tracing the development of their attempts to address this problem, Somers-Hall offers an interpretation of the sweep of nineteenth- and twentieth-century philosophy, providing a series of analyses of key moments in the history of thought, including the logics of Aristotle and Russell, Kant’s own philosophy of judgment, and the philosophy of Bergson. He also develops a novel interpretation of Deleuze’s philosophy of difference, and situates his philosophy in relation to the broader post-Kantian tradition. In addition to Deleuze’s relation to Hegel, the book makes important contributions to the study of Deleuze’s philosophy of mathematics, as well as to the study of several underappreciated areas of Hegel’s own philosophy.

“This is the most comprehensive and philosophically interesting analysis of the Deleuze-Hegel relation. Somers-Hall has assembled a remarkable amount of material that is quite diverse—from the problems of representation, judgment, and calculus to those of force and evolution—and his interpretations are masterful. This book will have a significant impact on the way we think about the development of twentieth-century philosophy.” — Leonard Lawlor, Sparks Professor of Philosophy, Penn State University

“Somers-Hall’s book is a profound engagement with both Deleuze and Hegel, and it provides a much-needed antidote to interpretations that all-too-quickly characterize Deleuze as anti-Hegelian.” — Daniel W. Smith, coeditor of Gilles Deleuze: Image and Text

Henry Somers-Hall is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. He is the cotranslator (with Alistair Welchman, Mergen Reglitz, and Nick Midgley) of Salomon Maimon’s Essay on Transcendental Philosophy.

DAVID LYNCH’S CRAZY CLOWN TIME (video & music by David Lynch)

One thing we have come to know and love about surrealist film’s favourite son, David Lynch is to expect the unexpected. Even if you twist it, throttle it and contort in into your strangest and weirdest fantasy, still the ‘Lynchian’ God will take it to the next level of noir-cray. Lynch’s latest venture, the video for the lead single from his debut solo album of the same name, Crazy Clown Time is no exception. While Lynch has collaborated with various artists including sonic soundscaper Dangermouse and experimented with sound design for some of his most influential works such as the creepily addictive Twin Peaks, this is his first completely solo musical effort. While the video for Crazy Clown Time, could easily be passed off as a demented satire of The Real World (as a band of outsiders indulge in a party with everything from fetishism to arson involved); we all know there is something other-conscious swirling in the endlessly brilliant brain, under that Internet meme lusted hair. While the track clunks and growls, the explicitly intriguing lyrics match the equally confronting images as an industrial noise soundtrack takes hold of the senses, something that Lynch is extremely familiar with invoking. Lynch divulged to Stereogum, “I think, when music finds a real nice home — a visual home — it’s like the whole is greater than the sum of the parts…I’m not a musician and I’m not a singer, but I play music and sing. It’s very strange.”

Karl Marx - Grundrisse - Manifestolibri, It, 2012
